Faculty at Union or at other institutions may request assistance with the design or production of laboratory equipment for undergraduate teaching and research purposes. Funds are available for equipment and supplies. Please contact Mark directly (hookerm@union.edu) or Steve Rice (rices@union.edu) about this opportunity.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Grants for Collaborative Research Teams -- Union College Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant.
The HHMI grant will fund one research project beginning June 2008.
The grant will be awarded to a research team consisting of two (or more) Union College faculty from at least two different departments, to carry out a project that combines the study of biology with engineering, computer science, math, physics or a related area.
Funding will include money for supplies (up to $10,000) and support for two undergraduate students for the summer (2008).
The application should consist of a statement two to four pages in length.
The statement should include:
(1) A brief description of the aims, methods, and possible anticipated outcomes of the research project.
(2) A brief description of the contribution each of the faculty members will make to the project
(3) A brief description of the role of the students in the project.
(4) A brief description of future prospects for the project (for example: will it generate future student research projects, will there be a possibility of seeking longer-term outside funding for the research, etc.)
Proposals will be judged by the Union HHMI committee. Decisions will be based on the scientific merit of the proposed project and on the degree to which it fits in with the overall aims of the HHMI grant, which is designed to enhance collaborations between biological sciences, engineering, computer sciences and other areas.
Please submit proposals (as hard copy or as an e-mail attachment) to Lisa Christenson, Department of Biology. Please contact me (ext. 8720; christel@union.edu) if you have any questions about the grants or the application procedure.
THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF PROPOSALS IS FEBRUARY 8, 2008.
